Two California men and a lesbian couple challenging a ban on gay marriage that California citizens approved in 2008 launched a federal case on Monday that could set national precedent. They hope an eventual victory in the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn similar bans throughout the nation. But a loss would seriously undermine efforts to win same-sex marriage rights in state courts.
